The 2005 Reach Out Now National Teach-In will take place in both fifth-
and sixth-grade classrooms, and schools nationwide will receive the
materials. The materials are intended to increase fifth- and sixth-graders'
knowledge about alcohol and its effects on the developing child, ways
to make healthy decisions about drinking, and alternative activities
to underage drinking. Materials are focus-group-tested and designed
specifically for teachers, parents, and children to prevent underage
alcohol use. They include a four-page set of lessons and in-class activities
for teachers to use as part of classroom instruction. Teachers are shown
how to incorporate the materials into classroom curricula in English,
social studies, and science. Also included is a take-home packet for
students and their parents.
The materials are based on research supported by NIH's National Institute
on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and programs funded by SAMHSA's
Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. They will be mailed to every
fifth- and sixth-grade classroom in the country in March 2005 in preparation
for the Teach-In.
